Incorporation of cryptogams in Dynamic Global Vegetation Models

This is a BECC Action Group who invites MERGE modellers as well to participate in a 1.5-day workshop bringing together cryptogam ecologist and vegetation modelers to discuss pathways to best incorporate new cryptogam plant functional groups into DGVMs. At the end of the meeting, we will draft a synopsis aiming for a “Perspective paper” that will highlight the need for, and way towards, including cryptogams in DGVMs.

The Arctic region is warming approximately four times faster than the global average due to climate change. To be able to predict these and future effects on Arctic ecosystems, Dynamic Global Vegetation Model (DGVM) have in recent years undergone large improvements for Arctic environments. However, one group of plants which is constantly ignored in vegetation modelling is the cryptogams (mosses and lichens), although they are important for many ecosystems processes, climate feedback mechanisms, and as a food source for reindeers. Thus, in this BECC 1.5-day workshop we bring together cryptogam ecologist and vegetation modelers to discuss pathways to best incorporate new cryptogam plant functional groups into DGVMs. At the end of the meeting, we will draft a synopsis aiming for a “Perspective paper” that will highlight the need for, and way towards, including cryptogams in DGVMs.
